R. Ford Loomis founded the R. F.Loomis Company in the latter part of the 19th Century. He carried office supplies, stationary and greeting cards. The business was originally located on Middle Avenue, also known as "Cheapside"

Around 1944, the business was sold to Ed Prentke, who introduced cameras and photographic equipment into the product line

Loomis Camera Village Store

In 1979, Loomis Camera Village Store opened in Wellington, Ohio. It was the first and only branch store. It closed in 1982 when Mr. Foxman experienced health concerns

The distinctive storefront camera has been a source of controversy. The city ordered it removed citing new building regulations. Many local residents rallied in defense of it, feeling the sign was a piece of history that preserved the original flavor of downtown Elyria. The sign was allowed to remain. Originally a press camera, it was updated with a Kodak Instamatic, and is now a 35mm SLR
